Séance is another band featuring Lucy Poems of Savior Sect. My review of Lucy Poems’ CD can be found elsewhere on Obscure Chaos zine’s blog. The band is a two-man project consisting of Poems and a musician known only as Omen. As on the Lucy Poems CD, the gothic Bowie similarities are here but the songs are a little less punkish and more surreal, moody and oft times hypnotic. The guitars have greater prominence here but there are still some musical and sound effects to enhance the tracks, in addition to a decidedly creepy introduction setting the mood beforehand. The percussion sometimes sounds provided by a drum machine, which seems to fit the material in its own way. The lyrical content penned by Poems centers on romance that is dark and morbid by nature. These combined elements make for a bizarre but imposing musical style. Personally I think it’s a good thing their 1989 demo was preserved and recaptured for inclusion here, because you get to hear where the band was at back then. The songs from this demo are rawer and lyrically darker than their current material. Youtube clips of these songs can be found at http://www.facebook.com/lucy.poems.
